The property was handed down to sons and grandsons of Augustus and finally to his great granddaughter they called "Girlsy". She died the day I was born, 1959. She deeded it to Samuel Lanier Laing (my uncle), who passed away some years ago and willed it to his daughter who is my cousin. The Laniers also married into the Shorter family who had a plantation next to the Lanier plantation. I am the third great grandson of the Shorters. The Shorters married into the Laings who had a large home in Hinson. I am the great grandson of the Laings. As a child, I used to play in the Lanier plantation home but it was in terrible condition and was taken down in 1976 or 1977 by my uncle to my family's horror. It was a large two story home with a very large center hallway which ran form the front door to the back. The entire home was raised off the ground with vents at the bottom to allow for cooling and the kitchen was a seperate structure to one side of the home. There are very precise drawings of the home in existance. There is still a well defined driveway which is lined by live oak trees which led to the house. The family cemetary is still in the back of the property and is maintained and Augustus and or at least one son and Grandson are burried there with CSA marked on the gravestone. (confederate soldiers). One fought at the battle of natural bridge near Tallahassee. I spent much time on those grounds searching the dump area for old bottles. There was also a famous amerian indian who once stayed on the property for a considerable time hidinng from the federals durinng the indian round up. My sister still has the original land grant signed by President John Quincy Adams and issued to Augustus. The property eventually made it's way to my stepbrother. Several of the live oaks planted by Augustus are still on the property and there are ten or twenty acres still left as the original land tract. It was once several hundred and there were reportedly 180 slaves. You can still see some areas where the slave quarters where and the spring in the back still produces water. I have one of the original slave made chairs and several other artifacts. My Aunts one of which will be 101 years old tomorrow have several tin plate photos of Augustus and much of his and his wifes personal possesions. I can put you in touch with my sister if you want more detailed information, but it seems you and I are cousins. There are many laniers still in this area, both black and white. http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.lanier/58.78.84.86.1.1.1/mb.ashx
