About Austin Baldwin

AUSTIN7, Enos6, Isaac5, Thomas4, Joseph3, Thomas2, John1 (of Woburn & Billerica).

BALDWIN TOOL COMPANY/AUSTIN BALDWIN & CO.SHIPPING

Austin Baldwin, son of Enos Baldwin and Lucy Parker, was b. June 11,1807; he. m. with JULIA CLARISSA HUYCK, dau. of John Huyck and Klartjen Radcliffe. She was b. Oct. 6,1805 in Kingston, NY.

Austin was into politics at an early age, as well as learning his father's tool business. He was called on to speak regarding the question of State prison labor as affecting mechanical businesses by no less than M.L.Davis, the secretary to Aaron Burr. Through no effort on his part he became the leader of the movement in regard to State prison labor, and looked to by the working men of New York as a champion. He was afterwards a frequent and eloquent political speaker and called upon by the Mayor of New York (Philip Hone) to speak; where he suggested reinstating the Whig principles of 1776 and, instead of planting hickory trees, there should be erected liberty-poles.

His political future was looking good when, in 1837, he removed with the plane business (which he became owner of after the death of his father) to Middlebury, Conn. He became a MEMBER OF THE LEGISLATURE, serving as Speaker. In 1857 he resigned his position as President of the BALDWIN TOOL COMPANY, and returned to New York.

In New York he engaged in the Foreign Express and Exchange business. He was still in that business, of the well-known house of AUSTIN BALDWIN & COMPANY, 53 Broadway, New York until the end of the century. In 1872 AUSTIN BALDWIN & CO WERE MADE GENERAL AGENT IN THE UNITED STATES FOR THE STATE STEAMSHIP COMPANY OF GLASGOW, and managed the line between New York and Glasgow until it was bought by the Allen line, for which the firm remained New York agents until, in 1907, that line withdrew its New York-Glasgow service. IT CONTINUED ITS SERVICE, notwithstanding its representing the Allen Lines, AS EXPORTERS TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES, A BUSINESS WHICH HAS BEEN MAINTAINED WITHOUT INTERRUPTION TO THE PRESENT DAY.

Austin Baldwin died 1886. (see Austin P. Baldwin)
