MRS. NICK BACKES DIES AT TORAH; HAD REACHED THE RIPE OLD AGE OF EIGHTY-SEVEN YEARS.

Mrs. Nick Backes, Sr., died at the home of her son, Peter, in Torah, with whom she has made her home for the past few years, on Thursday morning last, at 4:30 o'clock after a short illness.

The deceased was born in Nunkirchen Reg. Beg. Trier, Germany, April 14, 1821. In the year 1860 the family emigrated to the United States and settled on a farm 1 1/2 miles east of Torah village, where they resided until they gave up active farming. Since the death of her husband several years ago she had made her home in Torah.

She leaves to mourn her death the following children: Peter, John and Jacob, of Torah; Nick and Mrs. M. Knapp, of Roscoe; and two brothers and one sister, John Becker and Mrs. Anna Kron, of Torah, and George Becker of Duluth.

Barbara Becker was the daughter of Johann and Gertrude (Blasius) Becker. She married Nikolaus Backes November 11, 1841 in Nunkirchen, Germany. Nikolaus and Barbara had 10 children:
