Schindel Family

This family has been traced in Germany, Austria and Denmark as far back as the second half of the thirteenth century. The name was first written “Von Schindel” but latter the “Von” as well as in some families the “c” was omitted and written Shindell, Schindel, Shindle and Shindgle. The Penna., Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio Schindels come direct from the province of Gemmelsbach, Conrad Schindel and wife Barbara. To them was born October 18th, 1685, a son, who was named Hans Conrad Sohindel. He was married January 10th, 1710 to Susan Trexler, or Euerlebach, also a province of Erbach. There were born to them six sons and four daughters, the youngest of these being Johann Peter, born February 28th, 1732. In 1751 he came to Pennsylvania, landing in Philadelphia, September 24th, having been a passenger on the ship “Neptune” (Captain John Mason) from Rotterdam. He settled in what is not Lebanon, then part of Dauphin County. He was a soldier in the Revolution, and died at Lebanon May 29, 1784. He had been married to Anna Margaretta Gabhart and had two sons and six daughters. The one son, Johann Adam, died in infancy, and the other, Johann Peter, was born at Lebanon, August 21st, 1766 and died there September 17th, 1829. He was married to Anna Maria Menges, of Union, now Snyder County. He served in the Revolution, served in the legislature on Penna., was Justice or the Peace and Chief Purges of the Borough of Lebanon from 1823 to 1826. They had six sons and fix daughters, the oldest son being named John Peter. This son was born in Lebanon October 3rd, 1787. When of proper age he studied theology, being ordained in 1812, the same year he was married to Susanna McCollough, when they moved to Sunbury, PA, where he served the Lutheran church to his death October 26th, 1853. They had eight sons and four daughters. Of the sons, three were Lutheran clergymen; Jeremiah; John Peter and Martin Luther, D.D. The oldest son of Rev. John P. & Susanna Schindel was Rev. Jeremiah, who was born in Lebanon, May 15th, 1807. When seventeen years of age he went to Harrisburg to learn the printers trade. During his service there he was influenced by Rev. D. Lochman to take up theology. Returning home, he studied under his father, being licensed to preach June 10th, 1830, and ordained June 1st, 1831. One May 13th, 1828, he married Elizabeth A. Masser, who died at Allentown January 22nd, 1892, nearly 87 years old. The first charge of Rev. Schindel consisted of congregations at Bloomsburg, Danville, Catawissa, Mifflinburg, Roaring Creek, Berwick, Conyngham and other places. In 1837, he was called to Lehigh County, serving congregations at Jordan, Union, Heidelberg Lowhill, Weisenberg, Trexlertown, Lehigh, Ziegel, Fogelsville, Macungie, Tripoli, Long Swamp, Friedens, Near Slatington, Mickley’s, Catasauqua, Morganland, and Cedar Creek—the latter four he organized. From 1859 to 1861 he served as State Senator, representing Lehigh and Northampton Counties. In 1861 he entered the United States Army as Chaplain of 110 Regt. Penna. Volunteers, serving until 1864. In 1865 he again assumed charge of congregations in Lykens Valley, where he served until March 1870, when sickness compelled him to lay down his work and return to Allentown, where he died July 2, 1870.
