George de Worms, 2nd Baron de Worms (1829-1902) was an Austrian aristocrat (by courtesy), and an English public official and banker.

Contents [show] Biography[edit] Early life[edit] George de Worms was born on 16 February 1829.[1] His father, Solomon Benedict de Worms (1801-1882), owned large plantations in Ceylon and was made a Hereditary Baron of the Austrian Empire by Franz Joseph I of Austria (1830-1916).[1] His mother was Henrietta Samuel.[1] His siblings were Anthony Mayer de Worms (1830-1864), Ellen Henrietta de Worms (1836-unknown), and Henry de Worms, 1st Baron Pirbright (1840-1903).[1]

His paternal grandmother was Schönche Jeannette Rothschild (1771–1859), thus his paternal great-grandfather was Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744–1812), the founder of the Rothschild banking dynasty.[1] As a result, his paternal great-granduncles were Amschel Mayer Rothschild (1773–1855), Salomon Mayer von Rothschild (1774-1855), Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836), Carl Mayer von Rothschild (1788–1855), and James Mayer de Rothschild (1792-1868). His uncles, who owned plantations in Ceylon with his father, were Maurice Benedict de Worms (1805-1867) and Gabriel Benedict de Worms (1802-1881).

Career[edit] He served as Justice of the Peace for Middlesex, the City of Westminster and Surrey.[1] He subsequently served as Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey.[1]

Together with Theodor Porges and his brother Henry, he was involved with Foreign Bankers and Merchants, located at 1 Austin Friars in London; it was dissolved in March 1880.[2]

He became 2nd Baron de Worms on 20 October 1882.[1] Additionally, he was awarded the honor of Knight Commander of the Order of Franz Joseph.[1] He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.[1] He was also a member of the Anglo-Jewish Association.[3]

Personal life[edit] He married Louisa de Samuel.[1] They had three children:

Baron Anthony Denis Maurice George de Worms (1869-1938; married Louisa M. De Worms (1876-1948)).[1][4] Percy George de Worms (1873-1941).[1] Henrietta Emmy Louisa Amelia de Worms (1875-?).[1] They resided at Milton Park in Egham, Surrey, England.[1] He died in 1902.[1]
