About Barry Lupino

<The Times, September 27, 1962>

<MR. BARRY LUPINO>

Mr. Barry Lupino, who died on Tuesday in a Brighton hospital at the age of 78, was one of the best known of pantomime dames. He was a brother of Stanley Lupino and a cousin of Lupino Lane and Wallace Lupino. There was some justification for the claim that he had spent a lifetime on the stage, for he made his first appearance as a baby in arms carried on to the stage at Drury Lane Theatre, in March, 1884, during the performance of the pantomime "Cinderella".

Born in London on January 7, 1884, he was trained from infancy as a pantomimist, chiefly by his father, George Lupino. Educated at Blackheath, he learned dancing under Espinosa and when still in his teens became resident comedian at the then popular Britannia Theatre, Hoxton, with Mrs. Sarah Lane as mentor. After several years he decided to seek wider experience and toured in Europe and America, where he appeared in "A Barnyard Romeo". He played his first part in London in 1910 in "Aladdin" at Drury Lane, and in the following two pantomime seasons he appeared in "Jack and the Beanstalk" and "Hop O' My Thumb", also at Drury Lane.

His long career took him all over the world - he spent five years in America -and he was seen in many kinds of show business, but he preferred pantomime to anything else, insisted on being free to accept parts in Christmas productions, and was the author or part-author of more than 50.

He was three times married.
