About Baruch KATZ

Baruch Katz was his father's nineth child and his mother's 5th, he had a twin brother, Menni. Menni died in infancy. Baruch died fighting for the Motherland Germany in the first world war. Baruch is listed number 154 ? (grave #219 in the 1937 cemetery list) in the Jewish deceased persons Registry of Guxhagen. Next to his name it says in German "Den Heldentod Gestorben" - He Died the Heroes Death. Before "The Night of Broken Glass" his name was inscribed on a memorial plaque hanging on the wall inside the Guxhagen Synagogue along with the names of 3 other Jewish soldiers of that small town who died The Heroes Death in WWI: Katz Moritz, Lichtenstein Hermann and Speyer Daniel (Also Speier)

Baruch is buried in a German Soldiers Cemetery in Thanville' France. Block 2, Grave No. 40. Thanville is 12 kilometers northwest of Selestat and 42 Kilometers southwest from the city of Strasbourg near the German border. The cemetery is identified in the photo

Two who survived, Josef Katz and his sister Recha moved back to Guxhagen. Josef Katz was deported in 1941 to ghetto Riga and then later to concentration camp Stutthof in the Buchenwald complex from where he was freed in 1945. Both lived till they died in their seventies in Guxhagen. Recha died in 1970 and her brother Joseph six years later. Both were buried in the Jewish cemetery of Guxhagen - with their death the former Jewish community of Guxhagen was extinguished

Baruch died as a soldier fighting for Germany in the German army in World War II.
In the synagogue of his birthplace Guxhagen there was a memorial tablet on the wall bearing his name and 3 more Jewish soldiers residents of tiny Guxhagen who fell in the war. One of the others was his relative, also a Katz.
