About Bathsheba Cofer (Herring)

Barthsheba Herring's husband Abraham Lincoln was a poor and rather plain man. Bathsheba's aristocratic father looked with scorn on her marriage to Abraham and gave his daughter the choice of giving up her lover or being disinherited. The high-spirited young woman did not hestate. She married the man she loved and went with him to the savages wilds of Kentucky in 1782. Her husband was afterwards killed by an Indian, but one of her sons, a lad of twelve, killed the Inidan and avenged his father's death (some say he was nineteen and his twelve)

Bathsheba Herring Lincoln was a woman of fine intellegence and strong character. She was greatly loved and respected by all who knew her.
