About Beatrice ter Meulen
Henry Whitfield. 68 J.W. Ephson had a second consecutive marriage to Mary van Dijk of Elmina, who died at Sekondi 27 Apr. 1912. 69 Date passed on in several anonymous sources. However, it poses a problem with the death date of her ascribed father, being six to seven months late for a posthumous birth. This is an issue to be resolved. She is named as daughter of Jan ter Meulen in Doortmont (ed.), The Pen-Pictures, 339. However, there is a problem in the chronology. It is known that Jan ter Meulen died in Elmina in Jan./Febr. 1893, which makes his fatherhood over Beatrice impossible if she was indeed born on 4 Sept. 1894. Possible hypotheses: (1) Jan’s brother Peter Paul ter Meulen is her father; (2) Registered birth-date is incorrect. If it were 4 Sept. 1893, a posthumous fatherhood of Jan is plausible. Note that the source of the 1894 date is unclear. 191 Pl. 11.
