Graduate of Columbia University 1910. 1909 Chairman of Class Day Exercises Committee, Senior Class Book published May 1909. Benton was President of the Junior Class, Columbia U. In 1909, Columbia University yearbook, a paragraph was written about his running talent - "ran on the Varsity Track, Cross-Country and Relay Teams..." all 4 years, and Captain of same..., "Junior Class President, manager of the "Soph Show" member of the Committee, the Senior Dinner Committee, the Class Day Committee and an undergraduate member of the University Committee on Athletics." "He was an Alpha Delta Phi, a Nacom, and a member of the King's Crown."

Applied for passport Apr 1918 when 32 yrs old. His employer Pacific Commercial Company of New York was sending him to their Manila office.

Apr 6 1920 he registered in Shanghai, China with the US Consular General as a US citizen. States that he resides in Shanghai for "commercial business" for the Anderson Meyer Company. His address is 4 Yuen Ming Yuen Road, Shanghai. He holds a Passport #11303 issued by the Governor General P.I. (issued Nov 4 1919 for "commercial business in Hong Kong & China). January 26, 1920 is stamped on this signed printed form. He re-registers in Apr 1921.

In 1921 at 35 yrs + 8 mos he returned on the ship HAWKEYE STATE to San Francisco from Shanghai.

His NYC address was 4 W. 43rd St. He was still single in 1921.

WWI served in Secret Service.

In Elite Cavalry Military Division(New York) during WWI in China.

At 56 - lived in Evanston, Illinois / 2537 Central Park (WWII draft registration card).

Occupation in 1930 US Census - "transfer of commercial tobacco." He had married Margaret FABIAN Sanders. Their home was 120 Tabor Ave., Providence, Providence, Rhode Island.

In time they would adopt 2 children. As of the 1930 census a son William (1 yr. or 4 1/2 yrs?) is listed as being with them.

Benton was 94 yrs old when he died in Dallas, TX in a rest home - Jan 1981.
