Berteus Johannesen is the oldest of the 12 children of Johannes Eliassen and Alette Madsdaughter. On July 22, 1797, he was born on the Aspenes farm and died there in 1864.

It appears he may have married twice.

His first wife or, at least, his partner, was Elen Hansdaughter. Elen was from the town of Aspenes. It is unknown when or how she died. Together they had a son named Jakob Berteussen. Jakob died at the age of 21 weeks. He was baptized on July 29, 1817.

Berteus and his second wife, Marta Korneliusdaughter, married in 1824. She was from the town of Tennes. When he married Marta in 1824, Berteus he took over the outer part of the Aspenes farm (Division 1, 12 mk). His father, Johannes, retained the inner portion (Division 2, 12 mk.).

Together, Berteus and Marta had 7 children (4 boys and 3 girls):

Korenlius, Ane Marie, Johannes, Bertel Mattias, Karen Anna, Hagen Olai and Petrikke Marie. The oldest boy, Kornelius, born Aug. 7, 1825, died on June 20, 1834 at the age of 8. Two of the 3 girls, Karen Anna and Petrikke Marie, married and settled elsewhere. One of the boys, Hagen, born Sept. 8, 1839 and died Feb. 126, 1867, never married and nothing is mentioned about where he ended up.

Of the remaining 3 kids, one daughter, Ane Marie, married and settled at Aspenes (Division 3). One of the boys, Johannes, married and settled in Aspenes (Division 2).

And, son Bertel Mattias married and continued to live at the farm and took over his father's portion of the farm. So, perhaps when his father, Berteus, died in 1864, Bertel took over his Grandfather's inner portion of the family farm and his father's former outer portion was then split between the other two siblings. All I know is that, evdentually, son Bertel took over his father's part of the Aspenes farm.
