Howton was an assistant coach at Rice University for a few years and then worked as a building contractor before getting involved in financial investments in the 1970s. He and a partner were sentenced in 1981 to serve five years in a federal prison for fraud involving $8 million of misappropriated funds.
He served two years and then moved on with his life, which included a move to Spain after he met his future wife, an employee of Iberia Airlines.
