About Braina Rubinova (Bertha) Lasky Fisher

My grandmother, Bertha, lived near us in Chicago for many years. We lived at 633 Cornelia street, and she lived in the same apartment building, along with Aunt Lee and Aunt Eva (for a time). I remember she was a very sickly woman by the time I was old enough to know her well; she had neuralgia and diabetes. She took insulin shots. I used to run errands for her a lot. I remember on Passover she'd chop up fish in a big bowl to make gefilte fish, and I helped. We had Passover seders at her house. She also had, for a time, a live-in boarder who stayed in her one bedroom, while she slept on a bed in the dining room area. She was an absolute fan of "Gunsmoke", which she called "smoking gun" and I used to watch it with her all the time.

I did not know my original grandfather, Abraham, but did know Bertha's second husband, Ben Fisher. To me, he was my grandpa. He had a slight deformity of one leg and walked with a cane. I remember going over to their apartment on Monticello avenue in Chicago, an apartment building (they lived at the top I believe) and was very spacious. Prior to living there, grandma and her family had lived in a fairly large house not far from the apartment building where I grew up on Argyle Street. By the time I was born, however, Abraham had died and when she married Ben they moved to the Monticello apartment.

According to notes from Irene Pappas, Bertha had a first cousin named Sorkie Becker, who had two children named Lilly Becker and Sam Becker. She also had other cousins...two sisters, one of whom as Gussie Borin. The two sisters married two brothers. The Borin's were in business with, or may have owned, the Thrifty Drugs Company.

Bertha became a naturalized U.S. citizen on February 24, 1942 (document included).

A Marriage Certificate confirmation document obtained by Social Security from russia indicates the following:
