About James Biddle

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was appointed a First Lieutenant in the 10th New York Volunteer Cavalry on May 3, 1861, just after the start of the Civil War. He was mustered out on August 31, 1861. He was then appointed a Captain in the 15th United States Infantry on August 5, 1861. He was promoted Colonel of the 6th Independent Cavalry on November 11, 1862. He was mustered out of volunteer service on June 27, 1865. He continued to served in the regular United States Army until he retired in 1896 as Colonel of the 9th United States Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, United States Volunteers for service at Richmond, Kentucky, and Nashville, Tennessee, during the war. His wife, Ellen McGowan Biddle (1847-1922) who lies in the adjacent site, wrote a best seller in 1907 called "Reminiscences of a Soldier's Wife." (bio by: Ugaalltheway)
