Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General.
The grandson and namesake of Revolutionary War patriot Paul Revere, he entered the Union Army after the outbreak of the Civil War, receiving a commission of Major in the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in July 1861. He rose to Lieutenant Colonel and was detailed for a time as an Assistant Inspector General on the Staff of Major General Edwin V. Sumner. In April 1863, he was advanced to Colonel and commander of the 20th Massachusetts when the previous commander, Colonel Francis W. Palfrey, was discharged. He led his unit in the Battle of Chancellorsville and in the Gettysburg Campaign.
On the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg he was lying in his tent behind Cemetery Hill, where his regiment was encamped, when a shell fragment tore into his left lung, mortally wounding him. He lingered for two days before dying in the II Corps Field Hospital. After his death and burial he was posthumously brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers (backdated to July 2), for "gallant and meritorious services in the battle of Gettysburg, Pa., where mortally wounded".
His first cousin was Brigadier General Joseph W. Revere. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
