Luther Stephen Trowbridge joined the 5th Michigan Cavalry (part of Custer's Brigade) in 1862 as a Major. After seeing action at Gettysberg he was promoted in 1863 to Lt. Colonel of the 10th Michigan Cavalry in which he became Colonel in 1864. He saw much action in the western theatre and at war's end was stationed in Tennessee where he took an active part in the pursuit of President Jefferson Davis. On Sept. 1, 1865, he was breveted Major General in recognition of his service. He went to Yale and practiced law in Detroit before the war. He married Julia Buel in 1862, the daughter of his law partner, former Michigan Congressman Alexander W. Buel
