About Brig Gen John Henry Patterson
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John Henry Patterson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 5 May 1864, while serving with 11th U.S. Infantry, in action during the Wilderness Campaign, Virginia. Under the heavy fire of the advancing enemy, First Lieutenant Patterson picked up and carried several hundred yards to a place of safety a wounded officer of his regiment who was helpless and would otherwise have been burned in the forest.
