Ben notes: Burrell's young life is going to be a challenge to piece together. He supposedly arrives in Decatur County, Indiana, in the company of his wife's family in 1821 (settling somewhere in Washington Township, not at their final location in Marion Township), but is somehow back in Kentucky getting married in 1822, and the couple have their first four children in Kentucky (William is claimed to be from Kentucky, and not Indiana, despite census records to the contrary). Likely, Burrell's arrival in Decatur County was without family in tow - he may have been farming on his own with the Becraft men - and he probably didn't have family in tow until 1824-1825.

Ben notes: The land that he bought was likely the same 80 acres referred to in the will of William Jackson, his son, located in the eastern half of the northeast corner of Section 35. There are presently four structures in this plot, three of which appear new, and one of which may be the original homestead, located at: 39°16'30.68"N, 85°29'42.53"W. Burrell is noted to be a baptist, and likely the entire family were baptists at this time, as there are a lot of Jacksons buried at the Union Baptist Church just up the road (a family burial plot may exist on this property, but it isn't apparent from the aerial photo on Google Earth).

The website has the names Russel Jackson to Margaret Becroft. Believe when the record was transcibed from the original longhand, since B and R very similar and also small r and s, that this is Burrel Jacskon and Margaret Becraft. Bio for their son John Hope Jackson states that his parents were married in Kentucky before coming to Indiana and no record of an Indiana Marriage found.

Burrell Jackson can not be found on the 1830 census. Family records and a bio imply that they were there with Margaret's parents Benjamin Becraft. Margaret was the youngest of six children. We find Benjamin Becraft on the Decatur County, Indiana 1830 census with what is evidently their grandchildren. One young male and one young female. There are no variant Jackson surnames within pages of this record.

"(Burrell Jackson) came to the wilds of Decatur County in 1821 in company with the family of his wife's parents (Becraft) and all made a permanent settlement in Washington township. Later he bought land on section 35, township 10, range 9, and farmed until his death in 1869." Source: Jackson Family History, Greensburg Public Library, Greensburg, IN Ben notes: Coming from Bath County in Kentucky, this represents a distance of about 140 miles, or a week's journey at 20 miles a day. It's also worth noting that Washington Township (formed on May 14, 1822) originally included the territories of both Sand Creek and Marion townships. Therefore, the "move" from Washington Township to Marion Township may not have been a migration at all, but rather simply the formation of a new township, first as part of Sand Creek Township on May 2, 1825, and then as Marion Township on May 3, 1831. To date, the Section-Township-Range of the supposed first land grant location has not been identified. According to the History of Decatur County
The first lands given out in Decatur County went to John Shellhorn on October 3, 1820, who selected lands that he thought would eventually become the county seat between the Big and Little Flatrock rivers. When the Indiana legislature selected boundaries that placed Shellhorn's claim in a remote corner of Decatur County, his dream of building Rockville came to an end, and he died shortly after. Meanwhile, the Fugits were first to arrive in Decatur County in the 1820-21 rush. Others who arrived in Washington Township around the same time as Burrell and the Becrafts were: John Davis, John Moore, John Walker, Benjamin Walker, Alvah H. Graves, Joseph Rutherford, Hugh Montgomery, Henry Montgomery, Andrew Horsely, Elijah Tremain, Samuel Logan, Erastus Lathrop, James Richardson, David Williamson, John House, J. P. Richardson, Otha White, Eli Eggleston, Philip Dayton, John Nelson, David Dalrymple, Charles D. Misner, William Hendrickson, Samuel Hamilton, Robert Hamilton, Nathaniel Patton, James E. Hamilton, John Logan, William Elder, William Floyd. Robert Retherford, Joseph Retherford, James Sefton, Barlow Aldrich and Zachariah Townsend. (Those who arrived the autumn before, around the same time as the Fugits, included: Benjamin Drake, William Ross, Joshua Cobb, John Marrs, Thomas Hendricks, James Wooley, James Elder, Robert Elder, Andrew Elder, Adam R. Meek, Joseph Pryor, Allen Pryor and William Parks.) |
