Elias Burton Holmes (known as Burton Holmes), son of Ira Holmes and Virginia Burton, was b. Jan. 8, 1870 in Chicago, Illinois; he m. MARGARET OLIVER, born 1879 in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1914. She was dau. of SC industrialist Charles K. Oliver and Catherine Reed.In later years, they resided primarily at their estate Topside on Grace Avenue in the Hollywood hills, Calif. although they also had a residence in New York which was packed with treasures from his travels through Southeast Asia; this property he eventually sold to Robert Ripley (of Ripley's "Believe it or Not"). He died in Los Angeles July 22,1958; she died there 1968.

Grandson of Whig Congressman Elias Bellows Holmes (1807-1866) of Brockport NY. Never attended college. Coined the term TRAVELOGUE and built a reknowned travel lecture company which toured the nation for decades, and was one of the early makers of films. Former resident of 2 W. 67th St. (Central Park West) in New York City. Profiled by Genoa Caldwell in a large format book entitled THE MAN WHO PHOTOGRAPHED THE WORLD. Author of THE TRAVELER'S RUSSIA (Putnam, 1934), autobiography THE WORLD IS MINE (Murray & Gee, 1953) and other books. Co-worker of the late Thayer Soule and Andre de la Varre. During a photographic excursion, Burton Holmes met Margaret Oliver, a still photographer. A courtship followed and on March 21, 1914, after a moonlit proposal on a steamer's deck, Holmes married Margaret in New York's St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
