About Burwell Bassett, Jr.

US Congressman. Elected to represent Virginia's 8th, 12th, 13th, and 22nd Districts in the United States House of Representatives, as well as At-Large, serving from 1805 to 1813, 1815 to 1819, and 1821 to 1829. A nephew by marriage to George Washington, he also served as a Member of the Virginia State House of Delegates from 1787 to 1789, and 1819 to 1821, and as a Member of the Virginia State Senate from 1794 to 1805. He died after falling off the horse he was riding.

Philip Johnson, a member of the House of Burgesses from King and Queen County, Virginia, is believed to have built the 18th-century frame house called "Bassett Hall" in Williamsburg, Virginia sometime between 1753 and 1766. Martha Washington's nephew Burwell Bassett purchased the home in 1800.
