About Byron Jason Whitesides, ©

I am Curator of Alaska genealogy, a member of the Whiteside Family Association, and an Alaska Native, meticulously calculated 15/64 - 23.4375% Aleut & 1/64 - 1.5625% Alutiiq (just over 1/4 total). I am dedicated to Sugpiaq and Unangax̂ genealogy and also have a keen interest in DNA, where I have engaged in extensive self-study of genetics, as it relates to circumpolar Natives, with emphasis on mtDNA haplogroup subclade D2, the most common mtDNA in Aleuts.

My mother was adopted out at birth, so none of us could not get ANCSA enrolled without the proof of our boodline. This took my mother nearly 60 years to obtain and just a few years ago, I became the first and only person in my immediate family to become BIA certified (maternal grandmother's lineage only). However, I can't seem to get enrolled in an Aleut Tribe, nor can I get my BIA certification updated as accurate like my calculated blood quantum. Since none of us are shareholders and my other family members are with a Tribe in Southeastern Alaska, we are mostly unknown in the Aleutian Islands.

As far as my references, as well as photographs, they come through my interaction with Native families, a tremendously large library of rare and out-of-print books in my personal collection, plus amazing records that were given to me by the Aleutian Pribilof Island Association and the Native Village of Afognak to support my endeavor to document our ancestors.

If you require assistance in researching your lineage or if you have photographs or data that you can provide to enhance the existing profiles, I'd much appreciate it. My personal pledge is to help anyone regardless of ethnic background or Native identity and I mean to see the history of Alaska displayed here with some prominence, especially the Native history.
