About Calvin John Cillay
Calvin attended the first five grades in San Juan, TX and his younger sister Hazel attended the first six grades at the same school; the Texas school system was transitioning from 11 to 12 grades. Calvin and Hazel attended the next six grades in Pharr, TX (two years junior high and four years senior high in the same building) and Calvin was graduated from PSJA High School in May 1950. He enrolled at the Univ. of Texas, Austin, majored in pure mathematics with a minor in education, and was graduated with a BA in Aug 1952. After one semester of graduate school, he entered the Army in Jan 1953 and served in the Military Police. He tried to use the surname Cillay when he entered the Army, but his surname in the Army was recorded as Cilley. Released from active duty in Jan 1955, he taught one semester at the high school in Mercedes, Hidalgo County, TX. In Jun 1955 he returned to Univ. of Texas, Austin on the GI Bill, and was graduated with a MA in pure mathematics in Aug 1955. When he became employed, he used the surname Cillay. He worked as an actuary at American General Life Ins. Company in Houston, TX, as an 8th grade mathematics teacher at Edison Junior High School in Houston, as Managing Actuary at the Texas State Board of Insurance in Austin, TX, and as mathematician (Jun 1960-Aug 1966) at US Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory in San Francisco, CA. Then he got a job as an applications programmer (1966-1986) with General Electric computer time-sharing. After being laid off by GE in 1986, he worked at temporary assignments for such firms as Honeywell (Tucson, AZ), General Dynamics (Scottsdale, AZ), Orbital Sciences (Dulles, VA), Saft America (Cockeysville, MD), and Smiths Detection (Ijamsville, MD).
