About Capitán Diego de Torres

Diego was one of the first settlers in Chama in 1731, after his father's death. At age 39 on this same year he was Assistant Mayor ( like Mayor Pro Tem today I suppose) of Santa Clara. Like his father before him, he became a Captain giving service to the crown. He too became Alcade Mayor y Capitan de Guerra at Santa Cruz de la Canada.Having lost his first wife, Rosa de Varela leaving him with two sons, Marcial and Salvador, he remarried in 1712 with Maria Martin from Santa Cruz but a native of Sonora, Mexico. He had eight children from this marriage. Two of them being twins (hmm). At one point he was caught trading knives with the Indians for buffalo hides a day before the annual trade fair. Having become a widower for the second time, he married Rafaela Baca and fathered six more children. Incedently one of them was named German (Herman). He hada total of sixteen children from his three wives. (wow, what tax exemption that would have made.)

He went south after losing his father's El Paraje de San Jose Grant in a web of claims and counter claims, and asked for and received the Belen Land Grant south of Albuquerque. Therefore all the Torres' in the Belen area are from our same lineage. He was retired when died in 1754 and is burried in the San Agustin Church at the Isleta Pueblo.
