Bernabe de las Casas participated in the conquest of Zacatecas with Cristobal de Oñate. In 1599 he participated in the conquest of New Mexico. He obtained the rank of captain in the Juan de Oñate expedition of New Mexico. Bernabe distinguished himself in the field of battle at the Rock of Acoma which was a fortified hill inhabitated by the Pueblo Indians. The Pueblo Indians killed Juan de Zaldivar who was a nephew of Oñate. In retribution for the killing of Zaldivar, Bernabe de las Casas and his comrade in arms climbed the hill using ropes, captured the almost impregnable rock, and took five hundred prisoners. Bernabe de las Casas married Beatris Navarro the widow of Alonzo Albornoz de Sosa. Bernabe and Beatris came to Nuevo Leon in 1604. In Nuevo Leon he occupied important government positions and discovered the mines of Nicolas de Tolentino. He also served as mayor of Saltillo, Coahuila in 1616.
