About Edward C. Carter

Attended VMI and was declared an honorary graduate in 1864 (for war service). He was Drill Master at Richmond, VA, spring, 1861.

He enlisted as 1 Lt., Co. K, 8th VA Infantry, CSA, 21 JUL 1861. He was promoted to Capt., 2 DEC 1862. He was shot in both legs during PICKETT's Charge at Gettysburg, PA, 3 JUL 1863, and then was captured. He was treated at U.S. 2nd Division, II Corps Hospital. He was on crutches for the rest of his life due to this injury. In the summer of 1864, he was one of the "Immortal 600" prisoners sent to Hilton Head Island, SC.

After the Civil War, he was a merchant, banker, deputy treasurer and a farmer. He married Jane P. TURNER. He was the son of Richard Henry CARTER and Mary Welby DeBUTTS.
