Notes

  • http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/surnames.brown/25987.1.2.1/mb.ashx John Brown's 1824 will in Boone Co, Kentucky, lists his daughter as Clarissa Harlow Pike (the widow of Zebulon Montgomery Pike). It also names a sister Mary and a brother Benjamin Alston Brown of Woodbridge, New Jersey. George Brown's 1775 will in Woodbridge, New Jersey lists among his children a John Brown, a daughter Mary, and a son Benjamin Alston Brown -- but no daughter Isabella. To me that makes it pretty clear that the John Brown who is the father of Clarissa in Kentucky is one-and-the-same as the John Brown who is the son of George Brown and Mary Alston (married 24 Aug 1745). But it makes me question the oft-repeated story that Zeb Montgomery Pike married his first cousin. Perhaps Zeb and Clarissa were related, but more distantly. I'm still searching to find military records that confirm John Brown's rank in the Revolution. His gravestone calls him a captain, and I have not yet found a General John Brown in the Revolution. I would appreciate any sources that you have that prove or disprove my theories.
  • John Alston Brown, was the brother of Benjamin Alston Brown, Benjamin would be my great grandfather three times. There father George, and James Pike, who married his first cousin Mary Herriot, where all first cousins. There parents were James Brown, who married Agnes Foreman, Zebulon Pike, married Jenet Foreman, David Harriot, married Ursula Foreman, the children of John Foreman, who migrated form Scotland in 1685. John A. Brown and Zebulon Pike were second cousins. There is no Isabella brown in George Brown's Will, I also have the Pike wills.  Freeman Worth Gardner, my great Uncle, left some of this imformation about the families of Woodbridge NJ. I beleave John A. had a first wife Letitia who is buried in 1st Presbyterian Cem. in Woodbridge NJ. I have been reserching the Brown family for some time now. Like to hear some imput.
