Browning Family History by Clint Joyce and Cecil Houk dated February 15, 2000

As to the American origin of the family there are two traditions. One was that they descended from John Browning, an emigrant from England t Virginia coming in the ship "Abigail" in 1621. The other was that the father of Francis Browning Sr. received a grant of land in Caroline Co. in June 1735. He was born about 1690. It was thouth that Francis Browning Sr. married Elizabeth Lloyd, but records of Essex Co. shows his wife's name was Rachel. He may have been married twice.

Captain John Browning was born approximately 1588 in England. He married Elizabeth Demaron (b abt 1590) abt 1614. He sailed to America from Gravesend, England aboard the "Abigail" in 1621. He landed at the "College Lands" later known as Jamestown, York County, Virginia. He finally settled in Elizabeth City, Virginia, where as a prominet citizen he served in the Burgess "Southern Branch of the Brownings." Their known children were George, William and Joseph, all born in London, Middlesex, England.
