John Putnam (known as John “the elder” in our

story) was born in 1579 in Aston Abbots in Bucks

County, England. Although the precise order of

events is not known, it appears that John’s eldest

son Thomas came to Massachusetts and lived for a

time in Lynn. Around 1640 John the elder and the

rest of his family settled in Salem Village just

outside Salem Town. The family consisted of John

(the elder) and his wife Priscilla, their three

daughters -- Elizabeth, Phoebe and Sara, and three

sons -- Thomas, Nathaniel, and “Captain” John (also

known as John Senior). By 1692 the family had

expanded such that there were 55 people in 12

household bearing the Putnam name (by this time

John “the elder” had died). Ten percent of the

people and ten percent of the households of Salem

Village were Putnams in 1692. In addition to these

Putnams, many of the daughters of the second and

third generation had married into other families in

the village.

A number of Sen. Kerry's direct ancestors resided in Salem and in Salem Village (later Danvers), Massachusetts, during the famous Witchcraft delusion of 1692. None of his direct ancestors played a significant role in the process, either as an accuser or a victim or a judge, though he is related to several of the participants. For example, one of the most powerful accusers was Ann Putnam (1679-1715), whose grandfather, Thomas Putnam, was a brother of John Putnam, number 1670 above. In addition, William Stoughton (1631-1701), Acting Governor of Massachusetts, was the "Chief Justice of Oyer and Terminer" during the witchcraft trials, and (because he permitted the introduction of "spectral evidence") is generally considered to be responsible for their cruelty. He was a brother of Rebecca Stoughton, number 919, above.
