About Peter Avery, Capt.

Peter Avery (John, James, James, James, James, Christopher1) was b. May 10, 1764, at Groton; m. October, 1787, at Groton, Hannah Avery (No. 746), dau. of Lieut. Parke and Hannah (Morgan) Avery. She was b,. Sept. 9, 1770, at Groton.

He was in the battle of Fort Griswold and was taken prisoner and carried to New York. He described the sufferings of the prisoners and often spoke of the relish with which he ate two raw potatoes that he purloined from the basket of an old cook. He became a thrifty farmer and grazier at Groton and traded extensively in stock at the West Indies. He was made lieutenant of the 2d Co., 8th regt., Oct., 1801; captain, Nov. 29, 1803 (Ms. State Records, Hartford). His wife died Oct. 7, 1806, at Groton He m. 2d, about 1808, at Groton, Mrs. Nancy Ann Ledyard, dau, of Oliver and Mary (Denison) Smith. She was b. Sept. 3, 1777, at Groton. He d. Oct. 17, 1845, at Groton; she d. June 10, 1848.

He was taken prisoner to New York and as an example of their sufferings from hunger often spoke of the most delicious morsel he ever eat during his life being two raw potatoes he stole from the basket of an old cook while in captivity In 1787.
