In 1779 Stephen received a grant of three hundred acres of land located on the North Side of Gapway Swamp in Bladen County. Gapway Swamp is located in the extreme western part of present day Columbus County, near what was formerly the Old Georgetown District of South Carolina, now Horry County, South Carolina. During the Revolution this particular area was a hotbed of war activity. Many other Barfields lived in the area as well. (Source: Bladen County Heritage Book)
