About Caroline Wheeler (Killion)

Caroline is my G.G. Grandmother, and I have been collecting info on the Wheeler family for many years. I was recently given a photo of a portrait of Caroline Killion's father, but I had no info on her family. In searching geni.com, I came across your entry on Caroline, which gives me the name of the man in the portrait, David Adam Killion. The remarkable thing is that in the portrait, David clearly has six digits on ech hand - a thumb and five fingers, prominently shown. Here is some additional info from a letter writen in 1967 by my Grandfather, James Harvey Wheeler : "Benjamin (BJ) Wheeler was married to Caroline Killion. Caroline was a sister to Mary Parmer Killion, wife of BJ's brother, Leonard Lawrence Wheeler. My father always said that his mother (my grandmother) was a very religious person. She came from a large family. Cholera was a disease that wiped out lots of people in her younger days. She prayed for her life so she could take care of the rest of her family. To the best of my knowledge, she was the only one left living. She was 12 years older than my grandpa and lived in Indiana. Grandpa rode back to Indiana and they were married, riding back on their honeymoon on horse back to Iowa. They had four children. Their first son Lonnie died with a fever, in his late teens. Benjamine, Caroline, and son Lonnie were buried in the Elk Rapids Cemetery (on the west bank of the Des Moines river, west of the present town of Madrid, Iowa). When the railroad built their road straight west of Madrid, they had to build a very high bridge over the Des Moines river. The fill for the grade on the east side of the river was to cover much of the Elk Rapids Cemetery. The railroad offered to move the bodies buried in the Elk Rapids Cemetery, and bury them in a cemetery of the relatives' choice." Their son and brother, James Buchanan Wheeler, had the bodies moved to the SW corner of Mount Hope Cemetery, in Madrid. They had three other children -.Mary E. Wheeler, b. Feb 6 1854; Eliza Wheeler, b. Jun 1 1856; and James Buchanan Wheeler (my G.Grandfather), b. July 3 1857.
