Titus Family Reunion
The second annual reunion of the Titus family was held Saturday at Buhl Farm
and in spite of the unpleasant weather was largely attended. 128 sitting down
in the sumptuous dinner served at noon. Many were present from a distance.
Mrs. Mary Hanna of Sharon offered prayer and Isaiah Titus, president of the
association made an address. The gathering joined in the signing of
"America." At the business session, reports were heard from the various
committees and all of the old officers were re-elected. These are: President,
Isaiah Titus; treasurer, A. I. Baker; secretary, Mrs. M. Buck; historian, Mrs.
Irvine Moyer. Clyde Moore, Frank Lary, A.W.Meehan, Frank Jones, Mrs. James
Titus and Fred Dunham were named on the amusement committee. An informal
social time followed the business session and was much enjoyed. Miss Belle
Titus of Pittsburg created lots of amusement when she wrapped handkerchiefs
about her ankles to protect herself from the cold and the secretary was
ordered to place the action in the official records.
The Titus family is one of the oldest in Mercer County and has been prominent
in the affairs of the county. Reunions were held for many years, but were
discontinued in 1888 and revived two years ago through the efforts of Mrs.
Buck, the secretary. The gathering was composed of descendants of Archibald
Titus, born in Delaware in 1770 of Scotch-Irish descent and Nancy Hartford,
born in new Jersey in 1778. They located in Hickory township in 1802. The
family consisted of five sons and six daughters the following growing into
manhood and womanhood; William, Lucy, John, Anna, Mary, Samuer, Sarah, James,
and Eliza. Archibald Titus and several of his sons belonged to a company of
militia, which went to Perry's aid at Erie in 1813. Archibald Titus was a
stock-holder in the first turnpike built in Western Pennsylvania and was
active in the pioneer work that had to be done. Up to 1888 the connection had
grown to 95 families, consisting of 447 persons, scattered over 13 states.
This history will be brought up to date by the historian before the next
reunion, which will be held on the fourth Saturday of August, 1918 at the same
place.
Among the guests from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Hannan, Misses Belle,
Emma, and Carried Titus and Mrs. McCarron of Pittsburg; Mrs. Ida Winner and
daughter Eliza, Mrs. Will Lary and daughters, Esther and Mayme of Grove City
and Mrs. Charles Lary of Mercer.
