Carter Godwin Woodson became a school supervisor in the Philippines between 1903 and 1907. He wrote personal letters which alludes to problems he had with Filipinos in the Bureau of Education. Upon his return to the United States, he continued his studies at the University of Chicago and Harvard University. He was one of the first scholars to study African American history and in 1916, was the founder of the "Journal of Negro History". More here: http://bit.ly/jAHR68
