Ceolwald of Wessex was a member of the House of Wessex (see House of Wessex family tree). Although a member of the direct male line from Cynric to Egbert, Ceolwald was never king due to usurpations by junior branches of the family. His birth and death dates are unknown.

His father was Cutha Cathwulf and his child Coenred of Wessex. Nothing more of him is known.

He was the Underruler Of Wessex.

From the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, year 688, states in the WinchesterManuscript [A]:

'688. Here Ine [son of Ceolwald] succeeded to the Kingdom of Wessexand held [it] 37 years, and he built the minster at Glastonbury. Andthe same year Caedwalla [Ceolwald] went to Rome and received baptismfrom the pope, and the pope called him Peter, and 7 days later hepassed away.'

From the ASC, Peterborough Manuscript [E]:

'688. Here King Caedwalla went to Rome and received baptism fromSergius the pope, and he gave him the name Peter. And 7 daysafterwards, on 20 April, he passed away under the clothes of Christ,and he was buried within St. Peter's church. And Ine succeeded to thekingdom of Wessex after him, and ruled 27 years; and afterwardsdeparted to Rome, and remained there until his last day.

   Ceol of Wessex, also known as Ceola or Ceolric, was King of Wessex (591 or 592-597). The son of Cutha and grandson of Cynric of Wessex, he succeeded his uncle Ceawlin by defeating him in battle at Wanborough, Wiltshire. Ceawlin died in 593, making Ceol's throne more secure.
   Ceol was succeeded by his brother Ceolwulf. Ceol's son Cynegils later took the throne.
