About Charles Irving Avery

Mr. Avery, who died at the age of 68, was buried in Fort Hill on September 2, 1927. Born in March 1859, he was the husband of the former Lillias Pomeroy, who survived him by almost 6 years. The couple's daughter, Janet Pomeroy Avery, married statesman John Foster Dulles, who later became U.S. Secretary of State during the Eisenhower Administration. Mr. Avery was thus also the maternal grandfather of the distinguished Roman Catholic theologian, Avery Cardinal Dulles
