Charles was the son of John Copeland and Emeline Wise. He came to Percival, Fremont County, Iowa, with his parents in 1854.
In the early pioneer days of 1880 Charles, with a gang of freighters, made several trips to Deadwood, South Dakota and Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Charles never married, and after the death of his parents he made his home with his youngest brother, Sterling, on a farm near Percival. The two brothers were successful farmers.
Sixteen years prior to his death, he had a stroke of paralysis, from which he never fully recovered. The year prior to his death he suffered from heart trouble. He died at a hospital in Nebraska City at the age of 72 years 8 months and 6 days.
Charles was buried at Rector Cemetery at Knox. William and Elizabeth Rector remain buried at the family cemetery. Others were moved and reinterred; the majority at Grandview Cemetery.
