About Charles Anson Darland

He graduated from high school at Marble Rock, IA and business college at Des Moines, IA. He farmed for 5 years at Ruthven, IA with his half-sister's husband, Joseph Hanson, and then entered the insurance business with the Iowa State Traveling Me n's Asso. In 1893 he moved to take a position with the Indiana Traveling Man's Asso. in South Bend, IN, and in 1895, after a brief employment with the Studebaker Wagon Company from which he was fired for refusing to work on Sunday, obtained a jo b with the South Bend Wagon Co. When this company moved to Fort Smith, AR in 1904 and reorganized as the Fort Smith Wagon Co., Charles followed as bookkeeper, and later became manager of the Fort Smith Wagon Works, a subsidiary of Deere & Co. He ran for an AR seat in the US Ho use of Representatives in 1924 but lost the election. When the Fort Smith plant closed in 1924 he moved to Moline, IL as sales manager of the John Deere Wagon Works, from which he retired in 1931.
