About Charles Frady

From: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/amrev-hessians/2001-03/0985315497

The British recruited in the Duchy of Braunschweig between December 11, 1775

and October 9, 1776, asking for volunteers between 20-45, in good health, at

least 5'3" tall. They would be paid according to their abilities.

Charles Frady is listed in Riedesel's Order Book as "Wreede, Simon, Regiment

von Rhetz, Leib Germany, 5'4" tall (about 5'6" in American measurements),

born in Braunschweig, 17 years, Evangelical, single, 5 years service,

deserted at Winchester, February 6, 1781. Listings in Rimpau and Clifford

Neal Smith's Monograph #1 show him as Carl Simon Wrede, born in

Braunschweig, 24 years old, deserted at Winchester, Virginia in 1781. A

visit to the archives in Germany did not locate a Carl Simon Wrede BORN in

Braunschweig (he may have been recruiting from outside the area).

"The Specht Journal" indicates he left Germany on the Dutch ship, "Frow

Johanna", on May 30, 1776, and arrived in Quebec on September 17 or 18. He

was one of the Convention Army who came to Ablemarle, Virginia barricks in

1779 from Winterhill, MA. Potential brothers who were also from Germany may

be Heinrich Wrede, Georg Wrede and Johann Wrede.

Charles Veraity and Charles Frawdy are found in 1783 and 1787 Culpeper tax

personal records. He had a horse in 1787. Carl Wrede signed the Church

Order of the Hebron Church agreeding to maintain a certain lifestyle (list

of requirements by the Church). Charles Frady is found in a deed in 1790

living about 4 miles from the Church. Charles Frada/Fraday/Frayday/Frady

buys land between 1793 and 1827 in Surry County, N.C. (now Yadkin), Burke

(now McDowell), Rutherford and Buncombe Counties. He is a trustee in a

Methodist Church in Yadkin County in 1808. Two of his sons found in the War

of 1812.
