(N. E. His. Gen. Reg. Vol 53, pp43)

June 28, 1628 the ship Abigail sailed from Weymouth, England for America. Among those on board were John Endleott, afterwards Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, and Charles Gott. After a passage of two and one half months the Abigail reached Salem and two years later the records Show that Charles Gott, on October 10, 1630 requested admission as a freeman; that on May 18, 1631, he was received, as such. In 1635 he was made deacon of the Church, and all through his life he played an active part in civic affairs. His wife's name was Sarah, but I nave been unable to determine her maiden name. In the Records and files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County (published by the Essex Institute 1917) a John Mansfield is mentioned as a cousin of Daniel, son of Charles, but this is a clue that I have not been able to follow up.

There is on record a Gift Gott, who subscribed her name to the first Church of Salem, 1637 (published by Essex Inst. 1:39, 1859) Perhaps she was the mother or sister of Charles Gott.

1n1653, Charles Gott purchased land and a dwelling house in Wenham, Massachusetts, removed thither with his family and spent tile remainder of his days there. He represented the town in the General Court from 1654 to l666 and his name is frequently in the records. On December 8, 16 both he and his wire were admitted in the Wenham Church. his wife Sarah, died. on August 8, lou5. The court records the date of Charles Gott's death as January 23, 16667/8. In His will, proved March 31, 1668, he mentions his sons Charles and Daniel :

Charles Gott "...shall have my great copper Kitle and Daniel my brass Kitle."

In the history of Wenham by Allen (page 135) we find the following about the Gott family

"Another conspicuous name in the early records is that of the Gott family. Cnarles Gott was the only one of the first settlers who was honored with the title of Mr. After the removal of Rev. John Fiske he was appointed, in conjunction with James Moulton, to procure a minister, and when the church was re-organized, under Mr. Newman, in 16ó3 his name stands next to the pastor. He was also a member of the first board of selectmen chosen by the town, and he repeatedly served as representative to the General Court. The family continued to act a prominent part in town affairs, until the time of the revolution when those of them who remained, appear to have left the place. Tradition says they were tanners, and that their tan-yard, whicn stood on the north side of the road to Danvers, and a little west of the house now occupied by the Mr. Jos. Kent, was one of the largest in Essex County. Many stones; inscribed with their names, are still standing in the burial ground. The name is still common at Rockport, Gloucester and other places in Essex, But here in the original seat, none survive to perpetuate their remembrance.

Children of Charles Gott and Sarah lnunkn are:

   +Charles Gott, b. May 1639.
