The Second Boer War was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902 between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics known as the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic) and the Orange Free State. After migrating north and setting up the Republics to escape from British domination, the wanted to preserve their independence. The British were motivated by a combination of expansionist ideals and a desire to control the mining of gold and diamonds which had been discovered in the area. The war ended in a British victory and the incorporation of both republics to the British Empire. |
