SPRAGUE, Charles Franklin (grandson of Peleg Sprague), a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Boston, Mass., June 10, 1857; attended the public schools, and was graduated from Harvard University in 1879; studied law at the Harvard Law School and the Boston University and was admitted to the bar in Boston; member of the Boston Common council in 1889 and 1890; member of the State house of representatives in 1891 and 1892; chairman of the board of park commissioners of the city of Boston in 1893 and 1894; served in the State senate in 1895 and 1896; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fifth and Fifty-sixth Congresses (March 4, 1897-March 3, 1901); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1900; died in Providence, R.I., on January 30, 1902; interment in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Watertown, Mass.

page 878. SPRAGUE, CHARLES FRANKLIN, lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born June 10, 1857, in Boston, Mass. In 1891 and 1892, he was in the Massachusetts house of representatives. In 1893 and 1894 he was a member of, and latterly chairman of, the board of park commissioners of the city of Boston. In 1895 and 1896 was a member of the Massachusetts senate; and was elected to the fifty-fifth congress as a republican.

Richest Man in Congress The richest man in the house of representatives of the Fifty-fifth congress is Charles Francis Sprague of the Eleventh Massachusetts district, and he has distinquised himself by moving his personal effects from Boston to Washington in a pecial train of nine cars. The fortune of this Dives of congress is estimated at $7,000,000. Mr. Sprague was born in Boston about 40 years ago on the very ridge which marks the summit of Beacon Hill. He comes from an old Plymouth family, and his father was Judge Sprague, who died in 1880. -------------------- Harvard '79
