About Charles Young Webb, Sr.

Charles Young Webb, son of Samuel Webb (1789 - 1855) and Persilla "Polly" Crawford (1788 - 1855) was born 8 March 1818 at Malone, Franklin County, New York. He married Laura A. Smith (1822 - 1845) in 1843. In about 1844 he was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He and Laura moved first to Nauvoo and then to Winter Quarters. Charles joined the Mormon Battalion and was one of the first men to come upon the Donner Party in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Following Laura's death in 1845, Charles married Margaret Allen (1827 - 1919); they had six children. He and Margaret came to Utah with the Warren Foote Company of 1850.

After their arrival in Utah, Charles and his family settled in Parawon. In 1851 Margaret and Charles were living in Iron County, Utah; their real estate was valued at $700.50. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on 14 May 1852, and had six children. It is assumed that they divorced, as Margaret Allen was sealed to 'her second husband in 1856. Charles married Adeline C. Freeman (1828 - 1889) in 1852; they had ten children.

In her biography of his life, Charles Young Webb : Mormon pioneer, historian Susan Webb McClellan notes that he left Utah in the late 1880s and never returned.

Discussion

There appear to be many conflicting theories about the date and place of Charles Young Webb's death. The Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel site (listed below) claims documentation that he lived until at least 1894. Sources claiming that he died in 1855 Utah or Arizona are clearly confusing him with a younger relative with the same or similar name, as he married at least once and fathered several children after this date. The most often-cited date is 5 August 1890, sometimes claiming Rockwell, Connecticut or even Crossville, Tennessee. Further research is needed.
