Manitowoc Daily Herald, May 25th 1910

Aged Man Drops Dead on Street.Chris Peterson, Pioneer Fisherman of City Dies on 10th Street.Attack of Heart Failure is Fatal.

Stricken with an attack of heart failure while on the streets near Tenth street bridge at 8 this morning, Christian Peterson, an aged North Side resident and for years engaged in the fish business, died in the warehouse of the J. G. Johnson Company where he was removed by Dr. C. M. Gleason who was called to attend him. Mr. Peterson expired fifteen minutes after he suffered the attack and the body was taken in charge by his son Joseph Peterson and removed to the home on Buffalo Street.Mr. Peterson, as had been his custom daily for a long time, was on his way to the fish shantles on the river near Tenth street, to secure his day’s supply of fish, when he was stricken. He was nearing the end of his journey when he was seen to stagger, and suddenly he fell to the walk. Bystanders who rushed to his assistance found the aged man unconscious and when a physician arrived, he was pulseless. Heart restoratives were (tried) but Mr. Peterson never regained consciousness, expiring in a few minutes.Mr. Peterson was a familiar figure on the streets, having for years been engaged in the sale of smoked fish which he paddled from a small hand cart. He was 77 years of age and a native of Norway, having come to this city in 1864. He engaged as a fisherman in his younger days and in his old age had continued the sale of fish. Two sons, Joseph, of this city, and Peter, of Chicago, and a daughter, Mrs. David Sheldon, of Colorado, formerly of Branch, survive. One brother, John Peterson, in this city, also survive. Mr. Peterson made his home in Buffalo street were the body was removed and from where the funeral will be held.
