About Christiaan Lourens Dreyer, b4c1d3

Interesting history from "Voortrekkergesinshoofde" - Jan C Visagie:

I got the following interesting article from Ancestry 24

I saw your interesting article re the Kruger reaction at Slagtersnek. My family were also involved and almost caused the demise of the Dreyer line and of course myself and family.

Christiaan Lourens Dreyer born 16 August 1787, married to Christina Steyn in Graaff-Reinet on 16 August 1807 A historical episode occurred in 1815, which almost wiped out the Dreyer line as far as we are concerned. At the Slagtersnek Rebellion in 1815 several farmers in the Eastern Cape were executed by hanging as having participated in that rebellion against British rule. The two Dreyer brothers, Thomas Andreas (4.1) and Christiaan Lourens (4.3) were amongst the accused at the trial. Their sentences were, however, not harsh and they were acquitted. This happened during the rule of Governor Lord Charles Somerset. It would be fair to suggest that this happening was influential in their ultimate decision to embark on their trek to the Transvaal and Orange Free State in the 1830's, in order to, inter-alia, escape British rule. My oupa was ook Christiaan Lourens Dreyer. Dit gaan goed hier in Australie
