Born in Hancock County, Georgia in 1852, Clarissa was the daughter of Rev. James Barnes Roberts and Arianna McClellan Roberts. She was one of four children. She had one older brother, John Benjamin Roberts (b. 1849), a twin sister, Abigail, and a younger sister, Anne Elizabeth. On December 2, 1869, at age 17, she married 27-year-old William Rushin Ray of Washington County. They lived on the Ray plantation in Washington County for all of their married lives and had two daughters, Sallie Will Ray in 1870 and Annie Bell Ray in 1881. Clarissa (Katie) Ray died May 1, 1920 at her home in Washington County at the age of 68.
