About Cletus Joseph Matthews

Clete was known to have at times practiced folk medicine. In fact, he made some Linament and some Salve that was used on a local girl, Veronica Noland, who had several severe physical ailments and was reported to be "crippled up". After she used his remedies over time, it was said that the girl had experienced major progress in recovering from her limitations and was able to finally walk, assisted with a crutch.

Clete's Salve

  • 1 pint lindseed oil
  • 2 cakes gum of camphor
  • 2 cakes bee's wax
  • 1 oz rosin
  • 1 lump alumn
  • 4 oz mutton tallow

Cook all together in a Stainless Steel Pan! Stir well while cooking. Will foam. Strain. Store in small tightly covered jars. Retha used Vicks Salve jars.

Clete's Linament

  • 1 oz oil of cedar
  • 1 oz oil of spike
  • 1 oz oil of camphor
  • 1 oz sweet oil
  • 1 oz hartshorn
  • 1 oz turpentine

Clete would have the concoction mixed at the drug store in Loogootee. Sweet oil is olive oil. Oil of spike is lavender oil. Hartshorn is ammonium carbonate.
