About George Ashman

George Ashman, son of George Ashman, was born in Maryland in 11740. He married Elinor Cromwell, daughter of John Cromwell of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and his wife Elizabeth Todd. They had 13 children, including a set of triplets. George died in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania on November 5, 1811. Elinor died April, 1827.

In 1776, George moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania and established with Edward Ridgely and brother-in-law Thomas Cromwell, the Bedford Furnace, first ironworks west of the Susquehanna. On September 24, 1784, he was appointed justice of the Court of Common Pleas for Bedford County.

On December 10, 1777, he was commissioned as Colonel, 2nd Battalion, Bedford County Associators. His battalion saw action in Bedford County. For his service he has been recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution as an American Patriot and assigned DAR ancestor #A003498

The Indians had become a problem in western Pennsylvania. In 1781, George sent his wife and children to Fort Littleton in Fulton County, until the region was more settled. As more settlers arrived, a portion of Bedford County became part of Huntingdon County in 1787. The hamlet of Bedford Furnace became the town of Orsonia. In 1794, George acquired a large tract of land six miles from Bedford Furnace and built a new home at Three Springs, Huntingdon County.
