About Col. James Maxwell

Col. James MAXWELL,,,,,,,,, was born in 1661 in Gunpowder River, Baltimore, MD.  He died on 5 Jan 1727 in Baltimore Co, MD.  Colonel James Maxwell was the only child of James Maxwell.  He was a Ranger in 1692 and his district was from the Falls of the Patapsco to the Susquehannanh; Sheriff in 1693, and Member of the General Assembly in 1694.

He was the administrator of the estate of Benjamin Gundry on July 5, 1708. In 1709 was named as brother-in-law in the will of John Ewings, and administered Ewings' estate on October 13, 1718. In August 1719 was reimbursed by the County Court for having cared for the child of Elizabeth Kitchin. On September 30, 1712 conv. 50 acres part Galleon Bay to his son-in-law Spry Godfrey.


He married first Mary Harmer before 1681, second Anne Groome. Robert BARNES' Balto. Co. Families, 1659 - 1759:


Moses GROOM (ca. 1649 - by 21 Jan. 1698/9) m1. Amy & m2. Dorothy, who m2. Robert CUTCHIN. By first wf., Moses had Moses, kinsman of Ann FELKES, who in Feb. 1704 conveyed to him 100 acres, "Taylor's Choice."

James had several children by his first marriage including James the Elder, and several by his second marriage including James the Younger.


He died January 5, 1727.


His will dated January 4, 1727, probated March 8, 1727. (Arch. of MD Vols, XIX, Pg 205; XX, Pg 580; XXII, Pg 80).

To younger son James & heirs plantation on Watertons Creek incl. plantation seated by elder son James; son Asahell & heirs land bought of Moses Groome, 27 ac. bought of Robert Cuchin (sic), "Major's Choice at the land of Nodd"; dau Ann & heirs 500 ac. "Yapp" at head of Sassafras. Wit: Middlemore, Roberts, Hastwell, Smart. Not signed (6:64)


Administrative Bond was posted January 25, 1728\1729 by the admin. James Maxwell, with Roger Matthews, Micholas Day, and John Crockett. A second Administrative Bond was posted June 6, 1733 by William Savory, Jr, with Roger Matthews and Edward Hall. Savory administered the estate on November 17, 1733. Col. James MAXWELL and Mary HARMER were married about 1680 in MD.
