John Middleton Huger was the son of Judge Daniel Elliott Huger and wife Isabella Middleton. He was born in 1808 in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from University of South Carolina and joined the family plantation business.

At the outbreak of the second Seminole War in 1835, he enlisted in the Army. He was appointed Adjutant General with the rank of Major, under General Moore in the brigade of North Alabama troops. After the war he retired from active business and went to New Orleans with his family, where he lived until 1885.
