Col Robert Exum came from North Carolina to Maury County in Middle Tennessee and settled in the wild woods of West Tennessee in the very early days. He was a farmer and manufacturer and had his hand in many of the primary industries of his locality. Colonel Exum was a soldier in the War of 1812 and his son MVB Exum served several terms in the Tennessee Legislature. While Southerners, some of them were strong Union men, and of the children of Colonel Robert, his son the late Judge Exum, refused to take a part in the war as a Confederate, though all his brothers were southern soldiers. Col. Robert Exum married Miss Louisa Hannah. She was born on Duck River in Middle Tennessee and was of Irish stock. Their children were Washington. John. Judge James M. Samuel. Joseph. Louisa who died unmarried. and Martin Van Buren.
